The 1950 Likoni Ferry Tragedy | The Song That Kept Their Memory Alive
MMS True Crime Series··8:27
Some songs are written to make us dance. Others are written so we never forget. On 4 October 1950, tragedy struck at the Likoni Ferry crossing when a bus carrying a wedding party plunged into the Indian Ocean. Fifteen members of the Verjee family, an ayah, driver Kombo, and his assistant lost their lives while returning from a wedding in Tanga. But this tragedy did not disappear into history. Through the song *Ajali Haikingiki*, also known as *Dereva Kombo*, legendary coastal musician Fundi Konde transformed grief into remembrance, preserving the story while raising awareness about road safety. This is more than a song. It is a piece of Kenya's coastal history, a tribute to lives lost, and a reminder of the power of music to preserve collective memory. 🌐 https://www.mmsadvocates.co.ke/ #MMSAdvocates #LikoniFerry #KenyanHistory #CoastalHistory #FundiKonde #Mombasa #SwahiliHeritage #KenyanMusic #HistoryOfKenya #LungaLunga #Kwale
